Student Government Association Series 1.1

The Student Government Association passed their first bill of the semester and appointed three new members at their latest meeting. The bill allocates $1,000 to the School Street Food Pantry for the purchase of reusable bags.
Secretary of College Affordability Tyler Martin spoke on the value of the bill for SGA.
“It really helps the student welfare on campus. I think it forwards our mission by promoting student welfare. The pantry is a great resource for students on campus, especially those of us who are struggling to afford the basic supplies,” Martin said.
The first appointment was junior marketing major Allison Schwer for Watterson on-campus senator. Schwer is a resident assistant at Watterson and also a member of Pi Sigma Epsilon.
“When I first got here, I wanted to push myself to meet new people and make a difference. I’m a proud member of PSE, a business fraternity, where I serve as the membership and recruitment director. In that role, I’ve learned how to connect with people, figure out what they need, and help build a strong welcoming team,” Schwer said.
The second appointment was senior legal studies major Blayke Deere for ISU Pride ex officio. Deere is a transfer student from Texas. He founded his high school’s Pride Club and currently interns at the Center for Civic Engagement.
“I love what I do, and I would love to do that for y’all, and I believe that the student government organization has done amazing things, and I feel like their website could do to encourage that more forthright communication. As my experience in the CCE points out, a lot of people will simply turn their eyes away when they don’t want to engage or when they’re not informed,” Deere said.
Sophomore medical laboratory science major Isabella Lam was the third and final appointment of the day for Tri-Towers on-campus senator. Lam is currently the president of the Tri-Towers Leadership Association.
“What started as an organization I simply just wanted to be part of quickly became one of the best parts of my college experience. For the past 2 years, including this year, I’ve served as the president of TTLA, and I have loved every part of it. My biggest priority has always been trying to create a connected Redbird community,” Lam said.
