Student Government Association 9/28-10/2

The Student Government Association finished up September by hearing a presentation from the Student Leadership Advisory Board and the Education Student Leadership Advisory Board.
The two organizations seek to connect student voices to their respective deans in the College of Business and College of Education. They accomplish this through collaboration between student leaders, such as the presidents of registered student organizations.
“Our goal is to collect information, insights from the student body, bring it up to the top, and vice versa. We also serve to host large scale events for our respective colleges and to connect the student body,” junior finance and accounting major and President of ESLAB Tyler Miller said.
Miller continued, “We serve under the dean of our respective colleges, and once a month we meet with the presidents of each RSO on campus to both share information from the dean directly to the student presidents, and then to their RSOs.”
ESLAB is the younger of the two organizations, as it was founded last academic year, while SLAB was founded five years ago. ESLAB is particularly focused on giving students within the College of Education leadership guidance.
“Leadership development and workshops is something that we’ve been really huge on…we’re in classroom management and classroom instruction, and being the president of an RSO is a lot different than telling first graders they have to behave,” Student Life Senator and ESLAB President Sahana Mathan said.
The duo encouraged those in attendance to look into the possibility of starting their own SLABs within their own colleges.
“If you were in any way interested in doing this for your own college… it’s gonna take time and there’s gonna be a lot of trial and error, but we believe that this can be successful, [and] it can work in any of your colleges,” Miller said.
