Bloomington-Normal crime report 1/26-1/30

Written by on January 31, 2026

NORMAL, Ill. – As temperatures have remained in the single digits, walking and driving conditions have remained dangerous.

On Thursday, a driver passed away in a crash on I-39 involving a car and a semi tractor-trailer.

Police said the semi had an oversized load and was traveling at a reduced speed. Steven A. Porter, 37, of Bloomington, was driving the SUV that hit the back of the semi. Shortly after police arrived, Porter was sadly pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Along with dangerous weather conditions forcing students and staff to remain indoors, mental health-related cases have continued to spike on campus.

The Illinois State Police Department reported one mental health emergency at 9:38 p.m. Thursday.

Additionally, ISU PD reported an attempted suicide later the same day at 3:46 a.m.

On Friday, two more mental health emergencies were reported on campus.

Two residential burglaries were reported on Wednesday, and a theft was reported on Monday, all at Wilkins Hall. The Normal Police Department reported a total of 12 theft and burglary incidents during the week.

Temperatures are expected to rise in the coming weeks, with less snow in the forecast. Police continue to urge residents to use caution on the roads and to dress warmly to reduce the risk of illness and frostbite.
