Redbirds hang on late to defeat Crusaders 81-75 in overtime

Written by on January 14, 2021

It was a hard fought battle at Redbird Arena, but the Illinois State Women’s basketball team pulled off a thrilling win over the Valparaiso Crusaders. A few trips to the free throw line for both squads led them to a 68-68 tie at the end of regulation. However, Mary Crompton led all overtime scorers with six points to secure the home victory.

The redbirds improved to 6-2 on the season while the crusaders dropped to 5-5. Illinois state continues to play quality basketball in conference and moves up to 3-2 in conference matchups thus far. The two rivals are not finished yet as a rescheduled game is set for tomorrow at four p.m.

Mary Crompton had a career milestone while leading Illinois State in scoring. Crompton hit her 100th three point field goal in part of her 21 point effort. Heading into today’s contest, the guard was 5th in the NCAA in three point field goal percentage and first in the MVC.

As for the Crusaders, Carie Weinman contributed 21 points on an efficient 9-12 shooting from the floor. While star Shay Frederick scored 12 of her 15 points in the fourth quarter. Both players combined for three points on one for four shooting in overtime.

Following the second half of tomorrow’s back to back, ISU will host Evansville next Thursday and Friday for another back to back homestand.
