Redbird Gymnastics takes home MIC Championship

NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State Gymnastics topped the podium with a 196.025 at the MIC Championships on Friday, making it the Redbirds’ second conference meet victory in the past three years. The meet was hosted at The Gold Dome in Shreveport, Louisiana, where ISU took down their three conference opponents, Texas Woman’s, who scored 194.800; Southeast Missouri State, who scored 194.725; and Centenary College, who scored 189.200.

The Birds started the meet out on the beam, where the team scored 48.725. Senior Jaye Mack tied for second on the event with a 9.800, while sophomore Reese Grolla took third with a 9.775, and junior Leah Davis followed closely behind, tying for fourth with a 9.750. Illinois State then moved on to the floor, where they posted a 49.125. Mack took home the floor title for the fourth consecutive year with a 9.900. She was followed up by senior Alana Laster, who scored a 9.850 to land in a tie for second, and senior Sara Wabi, who tied for third with a 9.825.

The Redbirds headed to the vault for the third rotation, scoring 49.075. Laster was victorious in this event, winning the vault title for the second time in her collegiate career with a 9.875, while Mack trailed just behind with a 9.850 to tie for second place, and Wabi right behind her with a 9.825 to win third.

Bars were the last event for ISU, where they posted a 49.100. Wabi secured her first career individual title in this event, scoring a 9.875. She was closely trailed by Grolla’s 9.825, which landed her in a tie for third, while junior Jaly Jones, freshman Savannah Ray, and sophomore Jada Beswick all tied for fourth on the event, each with a 9.800. Senior Mya Robinson also took second in the all-around competition with a 38.900.

Numerous Redbirds also took home all-conference honors. Mya Robinson landed first-team all-around and second-team vault, bars, beam, and floor. All-MIC Vault team members included Alana Laster and Sara Wabi on the first team and Sammie Wolff and Savannah Ray on the second team. All-MIC Bars team members included Sara Wabi and Reese Grolla on the first team and Savannah Ray, Jay Jones, and Jada Beswick on the second team. All-MIC Beam team members included Jaye Mack and Reese Grolla on the first team and Leah Davis and Alana Laster on the second team. All-MIC Floor team members included Jaye Mack, Alana Laster, and Sara Wabi on the first team and Jaly Jones and Kaitlyn Donovan on the second team.

The NCAA Regionals field will be revealed on Monday, and the Redbirds will see if any of their team members qualify.
