The Neighbourhood- ((((ultraSOUND))))+

The Neighbourhoods (((ultraSOUND)))

By: Sky Rodriguez

After nearly five years away, The Neighbourhood returned with their 5th studio album (((ultraSOUND))). This album uses moody synth, catchy beats and (somewhat) meaningful lyrics to bring back the band’s signature emo alternative aesthetic with a matured sound. Listeners are debating on whether this is a brand new vibe for the band or if its bringing them back to the original 2013 feeling.

The opening song “Hula Girl” sets the tone perfectly. It’s breezy yet melodic with riffs and lyricism that brings us back to the band’s early success and forward into a new emotional feel. Tracks like “OMG” and “Lovebomb” caught a lot of listeners attention and continue this thread with catchy hooks and choruses. My personal favorites are “OMG”, “Lovebomb”, and “Private” ; those were the first to be released and caught my ear immediately. The rest of the album slows down a bit but is still full of nice pieces.

Lyrically, ultraSOUND carries familiar themes like heartbreak, nostalgia, and internal conflict but frames them through the lens of artists now in their early thirties. Songs such as “Private,” clipped rhythms and quiet confessions, reveal a band willing to get up close and in an artistic way. “Rabbit” and “Tides” explore self doubt and internal struggle with thoughtful instrumental interplay, while “Stupid Boy” closes the album on a more emotional note leaving listeners feeling thoughtful.

I believe the album is successful but it goes without saying, the critics are loud. Some listeners found ultraSOUND less dynamic than previous records and said that many tracks blend into one another and not much stands out. Some have described parts of the album as “too safe” and suggest the band didn’t take enough risks to fully rebrand and make a full comeback. The reddit responses range from exciting praise to mild appreciation, and I would say it’s as a record that may resonate differently with each listener over time.

In the end, (((ultraSOUND))) stands as a thoughtful and earnest comeback. It may not completely redefine the band’s legacy, but it confirms their ability to craft emotionally resonant music with texture and depth. For long‑time fans, like myself, it’s a welcome return and for new listeners it’s a good introduction to a band that’s dealing with growing up, feeling nostalgic, and reflection.

I would rate the album a 7.5/10
