Officer-Involved Shooting Under Investigation in Bloomington

BLOOMINGTON, Ill.  – A fatal officer-involved shooting occurred Tuesday evening in Bloomington, prompting an independent investigation by the Illinois State Police.

The incident occurred in the 700 block of Fairmont Drive, while additional law enforcement presence was noted in the 800 block of Arcadia Avenue. Homeland Security was also present at the scene.

According to a press release from the Bloomington Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 4:45 p.m. following reports of an armed subject. Multiple witnesses reported seeing the individual with a weapon.

Upon arrival, officers made contact with the subject. During the encounter, officers discharged their weapons, striking the individual. Life-saving measures were attempted, but the subject was pronounced dead at the scene by the McLean County Coroner’s Office. No officers were injured in the incident.

Arcadia Avenue is blocked off from Fairmont to Lincoln, with police tape sectioning off over three blocks of the area.

Community members at the scene stated that it was originally an active shooter situation.

As per Illinois law, the Illinois State Police have been contacted to conduct an independent investigation into the use of deadly force. Authorities have advised the public to avoid the area until further notice.

Bloomington Police has now handed off the investigation to Illinois State University Police.
