ISU Women’s Soccer Closes Out Nonconference Schedule With Win at Western Illinois

MACOMB, Ill. — Illinois State Women’s soccer continued its hot start to the season after a comfortable 3-1 win against Western Illinois Sunday afternoon at John Mackenzie Alumni Field.

The Redbirds improved to 5-1-3 and finished with one loss in their non-conference schedule for the first time in program history.

All three of ISU’s goals came in the first half. Maggie Dowling scored the opener just 90 seconds into the game following a free kick assist from Kaya Durkee. The second goal came in the 23rd minute as Rylann Law assisted Ava Watson to double the Redbirds’ lead. Six minutes later, Rowann Law netted the third goal to complete a 3-0 first-half scoreline.

The Leathernecks got a consolation goal in the 89th minute, but no further goals were conceded by the Redbirds as they held on to a 3-1 victory. ISU goalkeeper Madi Valenti clinched her 18th career victory as a Redbird as she moves into 5th in the all-time list for wins at the position.

Illinois State will continue its time on the road as they open up MVC conference play Murray State next Sunday at 1 p.m. at Cutchin Field.
