NORMAL- The Redbirds were given a tough task this past weekend as Robert Morris (12-4-1) traveled from Pennsylvania to play three games in Chicago, with one being agaisnt ISU.
At the end of the first period, the game was tied at two with ISU goals scored by Brennan Bergner and Thomas Treiber.
Once the second period started, the Redbirds were able to get three goals in just under a nine minute span to extend the lead to 5-2 in favor of ISU.
Halfway through the second period, Robert Morris scored which brought the game within two. ISU forward Trevor Hilt responded with a goal of his own to bring the score to 6-3 at the end of the period.
Once the third period started, Robert Morris dominated and would go on to score four straight unanswered goals. The Redbirds did nothing to help themselves as they recorded four penalties in the last ten minutes of the third period.
“In the third period we just shut down, we got a lot of penalties and couldn’t stay out of the box,” said ISU defensemen Mike Kavanaugh. “They scored five goals out of seven chances on the powerplay.”
The Redbirds were able to force overtime but it seems like they ran out of gas after being short handed all throughout the third period. In just one minute of overtime, Robert Morris scored the game winner to bring home the 7-6 victory.
The Redbirds are off this weekend as they prepare to face in-state foe, Northern Illinois on November 22nd and 23rd.
