NORMAL IL- After an impressive regular season and round one playoff win, the Ironmen of Normal Community are off to a hot start.
Last week, we spoke with Coach Jason Drengwitz of the Normal Community football team. Drengwitz has been at Normal Community since 2002 where he worked under a hall of fame coach in Coach Venerable and has been the head coach since 2018.
The Ironmen finished the regular season with a 9-1 record and were undefeated in Big Twelve conference play.
Drengwitz and the Ironmen lost in the state semis last season in the IHSA 7A playoffs but are looking to turn things around. In round one, the Ironmen defeated West Chicago 41-16.
“Anytime you have a really good offseason, can contribute to success or impact games on all 3 levels, can lead you to a successful season,” Drengwitz commented.
When asked about certain players who have really highlighted the 2024 campaign, the offensive line, quarterback, and several others stood out.
The Ironmen’s defense only returned 3 starters from last season, but Drengwitz credits the leadership from both sides of the ball with their success.
“In our only loss this season, to Kankakee..we were struggling at half but the way we were able to take control and fight our way back into that one stood out to me. Another one was in the Peoria High game when we were able to return one of their onside kicks for a touchdown.”
Tonight, the Ironmen will host the 8-2 Knights of Prospect in round two of the 7A IHSA playoffs. The game is set for a 7 pm start. The winner of this contest will face either Mt Carmel(Chicago) or St.Charles North.
