Illinois State University Students Pushing Through Disaster

Written by on August 21, 2026

NORMAL, Ill. — As Illinois State University students return to campus, many students are still coping with the aftermath of Thursday’s severe thunderstorms that left the campus and the Bloomington-Normal community without power.

Lucas Flynn, a Freshman at ISU, discussed how it was hard for him to buy his textbooks for class a couple of days before the semester kicked off.

“Having no power or no connection to the internet, it was definitely hard to access my stuff,” Flynn said.

Eventually, Flynn got his power back a couple of days after the storm and talked about how he was able to deal with the storm.

“I was still with my friends and everything so we kind of got around to it,” Flynn said.

Noah Wimba, a senior at ISU, explains that his current inconvenience is driving around the community because of the trees that are on the ground.

“You couldn’t access the road because the branch and the tree fell out. So it was very hard to get home,” Wimba said.

Students are still dealing with road closures and difficult transportation around campus, but things are getting better as time goes on.

Students are still ready to experience the football games, clubs and other activities Illinois State has to offer. Despite the students’ current living situations, they are ready to take on the school year.
