BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – On Nov. 17, Bloomington held the inaugural Local Hero Expo at the Grossinger Motors Arena.
This event sheds light on those that work to keep the community safe. It was also a chance for members of the community to learn more and show their interest in the jobs of a local hero. Communications manager for the city of Bloomington Katherine Murphy shares some of the reasons for the Local Hero Expo.
“As a community we know that there’s an importance for providing events that everybody can attend, that everybody can have fun, but we also see it as a benefit for us,” Murphy said. “If we get some that are interested in being a policeman to come, interested in being a firefighter – you want to drive a garbage truck? We’ll hire you.”
Several city departments are involved to promote public safety through interactive activities and inclusive experiences. Those that attended got the chance to speak with professionals and get hands-on experience.
Some of the activities included safety demonstrations with the Bloomington Police Department, a blood drive by the American Red Cross, an obstacle course from local military recruiters, and tours of Bloomington Fire Department vehicles and a chance to climb the fire truck ladder. Attendees also had access to Bloomington Parks and Recreation lifeguards, the Blooming Public Works Department, and the Bloomington Public Library Bookmobile.
