SPRINGFIELD,Ill.- Governor JB Prizker announced that October 3rd thru October 9th is National Fire Prevention Week.

The campaign for 2021 is “Learn The Sounds Of Fire Safety.” State Fire Marshal spokesperson JC Fultz spoke on the importance of safety sounds regarding fire alarms and carbon monoxide.

“What we really want you to know is to understand what the sounds mean and you can do that by A. Testing your smoke alarm every month of the year and you know what the sound is going to sound like but it’s chirping. It’s important to read the instructions from the manufacturer, replace that battery twice a year, Just follow the precaution,” Said Fultz.

Fultz continued with bringing up the importance of staying safe if there is a fire and/or carbon monoxide concerns.

“It’s so important if you hear the alarm letting you know the battery is low, that you change it right then even if it’s in the middle of the night get up and change that battery because what happens if you take the battery out of your smoke alarm and then there is fire, it doesn’t work anymore.”

Fultz suggests that smoke alarms be replaced every 10 years.
