NORMAL, Ill.- Children of color, their families and communities, have been treated differently and face harsher punishments in the education system.

ISU’s Department of Psychology invited Columbia College’s Professor of Early Childhood Education Mariana Souto-Manning to speak on Thursday, Feb. 27 in Schroeder Hall.

Souto-Manning’s talk was titled “Race, Racism, and the Education of Young Children” and was part of the Children’s Studies Minor Speaker Series.

The talk focused on the role of racial bias in our education system, and the ways in which it affects black and Latino children.

ISU Professor of Psychology Greg Braswell said that black and Latino students are more likely to face harsher punishments for breaking the same rules as their white counterparts.

Souto-Manning didn’t stop at just racism that faces the education system, but she later expanded on the pursuit of justice that those in the education system must take.

Her speech, “Teaching young children in the pursuit of justice,”  was held Feb. 28, in the State Farm Hall of Business and she expanded on the harm inflicted on young children, families and communities of color. She also offered solutions to this injustice.
