BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) approved several updates to their Return To Activities guidelines Monday afternoon.
The IHSA Board of Directors waived the 2020-2021 season limitations for winter, spring and summer sports. Per IHSA by-laws, they will return to normal season game limitations. Under the initial plan, these season’s sports would have been allowed no more than two contests per week.
IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson said the changes will help the school year to be fluid.
“When the IHSA’s initial Return To Activities guidelines were established, the limitation of two contests per week felt like a constraint that would help limit exposure,” said Anderson. “However, given how well our state is handling the pandemic, and the lack of setbacks in the fall sports we have conducted so far, there was a consensus that we could move forward with allowing schools to schedule winter, spring, and summer sports without further restrictions.”
The summer sports (baseball, softball, track & field, girls soccer, lacrosse, boys tennis) will resume two weeks earlier than before. This means that practices can begin on April 19 and games can start on May 3.
