School Street Food Pantry continues to provide for ISU students

NORMAL, Ill. – While some students worry about online classes and paying rent, the School Street Food Pantry continues to provide easy access to food.

The pantry opened in the fall of 2018 as a means to provide free access to food for students.

In the past students were able to select any food they desired in the pantry. During the pandemic, the pantry now provides a variety of food in a box or bag for students to pick up.

The chair of the School Street Food Pantry board, Kerri Clavert says the pantry is still providing services while adhering to social distancing guidelines.

“The pantry saw a spike of students the week Governor Pritzker announced a “shelter in place” order,” said Calvert.

The pantry recently started providing a roll of toilet paper and other necessities for students. Every box or bag is packaged with the same items.

While the pantry has seen a decline in donations during the shelter in place order, they continue to push through.

“We plan on providing services as long as possible during the pandemic,” said Calvert.

The pantry provides prepackaged food every Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. for students presenting valid IDs. They are still accepting food and monetary donations for the pantry.

The pantry is located at First United Methodist Church in Normal.
