Heartland Phi Theta Kappa inducts 12, expands leadership and scholarship opportunities

Written by on September 13, 2025

NORMAL, Ill. – Twelve students were recently inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society chapter at Heartland Community College.

The honor society aims to connect students at two-year universities with one another and provide access to programs like conferences and scholarship opportunities to strengthen their resumes.

“Primarily, it serves students who are looking to transfer to four-year universities, and so it helps them build a more competitive resume when they’re looking to transfer,” said Matt Felumlee, Distinguished Professor of English at Heartland Community College and faculty adviser for PTK.

There are scholarships offered for over 800 four-year colleges and universities, and there are approximately 1,300 chapters of PTK internationally, with a majority in the United States.

“Heartland also has an honors program, which is related to PTK. It’s for students who are PTK eligible,” Felumlee said. “It’s more or less for students who are looking to go above and beyond just membership and PTK and also get involved in some research projects and community service projects.”

The Heartland Community College honors program is partnered with PTK, allowing for collaboration and more opportunities. If students are enrolled in the honors program, their PTK fees are covered by the college.

“They can earn medals and awards for scholastic and leadership achievements,” Felumlee said. “They can get research and writings and projects published.”

Through roles such as president, treasurer and publicity officer, PTK offers students valuable opportunities to grow as leaders.

When students are completed with their time at a two-year university like Heartland, they can further develop skills to make more connections and educational opportunities.
