Leon Thomas – Mutt
Sky Rodriguez April 21, 2025
From Nickelodeon star to trending in the top 40 songs in music right now, Leon Thomas seems to be doing very well and from what I heard in his sophomore album, MUTT, I would have to agree. I took a deep dive into this album and found that it is about the complexity of heartbreak and the growth and soul searching that comes with it. It is 14 songs and 47 minutes too short. While listening I honestly found that this album flew by for me and I was left wishing there was more. I heard influence from jazz and rock but I would say this was an R&B and Hip Hop album.
There are a few features throughout the album such as Ty Dolla $ign, Baby Rose, and Maseago who I’d never heard of but the song he was featured on (LUCID DREAMS) happened to be one of my favorites. The first two songs in the album being, HOW FAST and SAFE PLACE are also two of my top songs off of the album. They have the most rock influence and I love when I hear a mix of rock within Hip Hop music. The song MUTT has been trending in the top 40 songs today and that one is my final favorite. It’s catchy, upbeat, and might even be relatable to some.
Overall, I really enjoyed this album more than expected. Besides Victorious, I’d never heard much from Leon Thomas, but after further research I see that he has actually written music for tons of artists like Ariana Grande, Drake, SZA, Post Malone, and tons of other popular artists. This checks out because his lyrics were my favorite part of this whole project. If you listen closely, they are very carefully written and meaningful. I also really enjoy the ad libs throughout all of the songs. I would recommend giving this album a listen. There is bound to be something for everyone.
I would rate this album a 6.5/10
