You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl So In Love- Olivia Rodrigo Album Review

Olivia Rodrigo started off “sad girl summer” with the release of her third studio album, “You seem pretty sad for a girl so in love”, on June 12, 2026

 

Olivia Rodrigo is a female pop star who started her role in the entertainment industry as a child actor. She is most well known for her performance in “American Girl Doll: Grace Stirs Up Success”, Disney Channel’s “Bizzardvark”, and Disney’s “High School Musical The Musical The Series”. She debuted into the music industry as an artist with her hit single “Drivers License” and then her debut album, Sour, which includes hits like “Good 4 You” and “Deja Vu” as well in 2021. As she grew into a bigger artist she released her sophomore album Guts in 2023 which is most known for her singles “Vampire” and “Get Him Back”. 

 

“You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl So In Love” is a raw interscope of the two sides of love. Rodrigo expresses these sides through a split of “hopeful love” and “sad love” songs. This album gives off a different vibe than her first albums Sour and Guts, but still embody the essence of emotion and some of her newer rock sound. The first single for this album, “Drop Dead”, was released on April 17, 2026. This song is a hopeful view on new love and fantasizing how amazing major feelings can be when you have a crush. The tone switched when she released her second single from the album titled “The Cure”. This song is about how love can never be a bandage if it has been a wound in the past. There is lots of correlation between the mind and heart connection in this song with the brain and heart.“Stupid Song” is the third single which was released with the album. The only feature on this album is on the song “What’s Wrong With Me” with Robert Smith from the band The Cure. The story of this long links the love and sadness together. While the lyrics are rather hopeful and sweet, the vibe of the song and music video swing more to the yearning and sad side. 

 

This entire album is speculated to be in inspiration of her last relationship with actor Louis Partridge. Their relationship lasted about 2 years and ended at the end of 2025 

 

A lot of my favorite songs stem from the “you seem pretty sad” side of the record. “Less” has to be one of Rodrigo’s best songs in my opinion because of how raw she is. In the lyrics, “If loving me means letting go and wishing me the best, then I guess, I wish, I wish, I wish you loved me less”, listeners take away a deep message of how you would want anything from anyone, even if it’s less, if it means they stay. Rodrigo also debuted another one of my favorite tracks, “Begged”, on SNL prior to its release. “Begged” is one of my favorite songs lyrically that she has produced. Her metaphors really trap the visuals of her feelings like in verse one where she sings, “I’m an anchor in the ocean, you know I could never leave”, and in verse two, “I’m a penny in a fountain, just waiting on my luck to change”.  The final favorite I have on the sad side of the record is “Cigarette Smoke”. This song is the longest on the album, but is an absolutely perfect closer to this album. Rodrigo ties in almost a closing statement of her love and sad side of the record. “But it’s better than begging for you to stand up for me, honeybee”, is a line that brings in one of her love songs “Honeybee” and sad songs “Begged” and accepting the fate of being a sad girl with love. I also love her vocals in the bridge. My favorite song that is more upbeat is “Expectations” which has a fun story of women dating in this generation. While my other favorite “Maggots For Brains” lyrically is more melancholy, the upbeat feel is very “let loose” vibes. 

I also loved how this album became a rebrand for Rodrigo. Her brand used to be the color purple from her first two albums and aesthetics. This album is pink and some blue, basically more of a dainty vibe. She does tie in purple in this album with a track titled “Purple” which is on the happier end of her songs by explaining the match of two people fits so well it could make a beautiful color, such as purple. 

 

Overall, the combination of a heart yearning for love but knowing heartbreak too well has really shown Olivia Rodrigo’s artistry on how to tell multiple sides of a story. While these songs are all related to her life and relationship it is easy to appreciate the work. Her sound, storytelling, and connectivity has amplified from her previous projects, perfect for fans, audiences, and any listener wanting to relate to deep music.
