Alone at Prom – Tory Lanez

Jane Reardon March 21, 2022

By: Jane Reardon

Tory Lanez released his 80’s inspired album Alone at Prom on December 10, 2021. This is his sixth studio album and I highly encourage everyone to give it a listen. I think this album is very unique in that it is more than just an album, it’s a creative project. This album is also very fun to listen to because of how consistent the retro sound is.

Alone at Prom has a very distinct theme of an 80’s prom. It is apparent that the overall aesthetic of this album was very planned out and the attention to detail, down to the cover art, is impressive. All 11 songs on the album remind me of a John Hughes movie. Troy Lanez even created an alter ego “Ashton Rain” for this album and its music videos.

For me, this is definitely a zero-skip album. I love every song and feel like the track list flows extremely well, with each song still sounding very different. The techno, R&B beats are fresh and nostalgic.

There is only one feature on this album, and it is Tee on the song “Pink Dolphin Sunset” where she really only comes in at the tail end of the song harmonizing Tory for a few seconds. I would have liked to see at least one more feature because I think the throwback concept would have been cool for other artists to participate in.

Overall, this album surprised me. I don’t find myself listening to Tory Lanez or 80’s music very often but he hit this album right on the mark.
