NORMAL – Illinois State women’s basketball (10-6, 3-2 MVC) continued their winning ways on Friday night, as they defeated in-state rival Southern Illinois (8-7, 1-3 MVC) 60-52 in Missouri Valley Conference play.
The Redbirds were led by senior Simone Goods who tallied her sixth double-double of the season, as she finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Eight of her points came from the free throw line where she was a perfect 8-8. Junior Tete Maggett was the only other Illinois State player to finish in double figures with 12 points, while Katrina Beck led the way defensively with three steals.
“Getting rebounds and getting stops was what really won us this game,” said Goods. “Everyone just contributed when they were having a bad night, we just had to step up and find a way to win.”
Southern Illinois also had two scorers finish in double figures as Makenzie Silvey had 13 points and Abby Brockmeyer added 10 points for the Salukis.
“I really have to give our kids credit,” said head coach Kristen Gillespie. “We really challenged them going into the fourth quarter and we really flipped the script scoring 22 points and I think we really won the battle.”
The win improves Illinois State’s record to 7-1 at Redbird Arena this season. The Redbirds will be in action on their home floor once again on Sunday as they take on the Missouri State Bears at 2 p.m. The game can be listened to on WZND.com and 103.3 WZND, the Pulse of Redbird Nation.
