Unveiling the Science and Significance of the Upcoming Total Solar Eclipse

NORMAL, Ill. – As the countdown to the highly anticipated total solar eclipse comes to a near end, the campus of Illinois State University is gearing up.

The total solar eclipse is a rare astronomical event where the moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, blocking all or part of the Sun’s light. It will cast its shadow across numerous states and cities, including Bloomington-Normal.

Safety is crucial when observing solar eclipses. Looking directly at the sun without proper eye protection can cause permanent eye damage. Specialized solar viewing glasses or indirect viewing methods, such as pinhole projectors, are recommended to safely observe solar eclipses.

Illinois States Emergency Management Department, Astronomy Club, Office of Sustainability, Physics Club and several other campus groups are helping to provide the campus with viewing glasses, leading up to the event. Glasses will be distributed on the quad and to each major building.

Astronomer and ISU Planetarium Director Tom Willmitch highlights the scientific meaning behind why the solar eclipse is important.

“When we get the moon directly in front of the earth and the sun, that is when we experience a total solar eclipse. The shadow of the moon is so big that it will cover a good chunk of the United States,” he said. 

Willmitch explains that there is a very narrow band, around 100 miles of width, of the shadow where it is possible to see no light from the sun.

“This path of totality stretches from the Pacific coast of Mexico, through Texas, Carbondale, Indianapolis, Cleveland, up to New England and then into the Atlantic Ocean,” Willmitch said. “In locations like Carbondale, viewers may even catch sight of Jupiter, Venus and Mars during the eclipse.”

During totality, the sun’s bright corona becomes visible, extending beyond the Moon’s outline. The mesmerizing sight signifies the peak of totality, accompanied by crickets chirping, stars emerging in the sky, birds returning to their nests and a drop in temperatures.

The upcoming total solar eclipse promises to be a remarkable celestial event, captivating observers with its scientific wonder and natural beauty.
