NORMAL, Ill. – 182 artists who graduated between 1968 and 2023 are participating in University Galleries’ current exhibit “Alumni Spectacular.”
The “Alumni Spectacular” celebrates University Galleries’ 50th Anniversary and all of the talented artists from its history. All artwork displayed are from those that have graduated from the Wonsook Kim School of Art and Creative Technology program.
The vibrant exhibition fills University Galleries from Jan. 26 through Feb. 20, 2024. Director and Chief Curator Kendra Paitz expressed her excitement to have all these generations in conversation with one another.
She designs the layout of the gallery and determines which sculptures, glass-work or paintings are best represented in the gallery.
“It’s a unique show for us [University Galleries.] It’s only the third time we’ve done it,” she said.
The first show was in 2010 to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the Wonsook Kim School of Fine Arts. The exhibition occured again in 2015 to celebrate University Galleries’ new location in Uptown Normal. In 2020, the exhibition was planned to take place but later delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“This is a way that we can really bring everyone together,” said Paitz. “The ‘Alumni Spectacular’ allows for all former graduates to showcase their creativity alongside others who create.”
In the spirit of bringing everyone together, the gallery will be leading art-making workshops during the timespan of the exhibit. Students, families and community members are encouraged to join.
Sensory hours are offered on specific days for those who prefer to admire the artwork in silence. Scavenger hunts are also available for fun inside the gallery.
