Student Leadership Advisory Board: President Tyler Miller

The Student Leadership Advisory Board (SLAB) is a council made up of presidents of all registered student organizations (RSO’s) in the College of Business (COB) at Illinois State.
The board meets with and serves as a liaison to the Dean, as well as COB leadership to discuss student concerns and initiatives.
SLAB president Tyler Miller gave some insight into what the organization does.
“We meet once a month hosting general assemblies, which brings all the presidents together to collect this information,” Miller said. “Our year’s really been focused on building relationships between the presidents to increase collaboration within the college.”
Miller also discussed how he got the role of SLAB president.
“At the end of my freshman year, I know I was heavily involved within my business fraternity and I kind of heard about SLAB,” Miller said. “So at the end of my sophomore year, I ran for president, which took a lot of campaigning, a lot of meeting with presidents and different RSO members. I was fortunate enough to win and now I am in the role now.”
SLAB has the goal of reaching a broader audience and changing the image of COB.
Miller wants to foster a culture shift in where COB is respected with the rest of the programs at ISU.
“You know for me, it really just comes down to changing the culture,” Miller said. “I feel like the College of Business sometimes has, you know, maybe a bad reputation where, I feel like some students think that they’re (COB students) all high and mighty. At the end of the day, we’re all just students trying to pass our classes, get a job, succeed within our time here and make friends. So {it’s} just really focusing on that culture and making sure that it’s a very positive one where people feel it’s friendly competition and everyone’s trying to push each other to grow.”
SLAB will continue to host events to promote engagement and collaboration within the organization.
The group welcomes majors centering on business, accounting, finance, marketing, human resources, management and more.
