NORMAL – The Illinois State Women’s Basketball team (10-7 , 3-3 MVC) was defeated 59-47 by the Missouri State Bears (9-7, 5-0 MVC) Sunday afternoon.
The Redbirds were lead by Junior guard Tete Maggett who recorded 11 points and 6 rebounds. Senior Simone Goods only played 18 minutes scoring 2 points.
Head Coach Kristen Gillespie expressed her disappointment with Good’s effort.
“I am not going to coach effort anymore,” said Gillespie. “As a coach it’s a delicate balance at times. At the end of the day I can’t sacrifice the culture of what we are trying to build.”
As a result senior Lexi Wallen and freshman Kayel Newland saw increased minutes in the game. Both of which were able to capitalize on the opportunity with 8-point outings.
Coach Gillespie spoke about why the Freshmen were able to have such a big impact today.
“Both of these young ladies play hard. They are the future of our program and I thing they deserved those minutes.”
The Redbirds will look to get back to winning ways next Saturday as they take on the Bradley Braves in Redbird Arena. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. with the broadcast on 103.3 WZND starting at 3:50 p.m.
