Slow Start Proves Costly Against Valparaiso

NORMAL Ill. – The ISU men’s basketball team fell to Valparaiso 69-60 Friday evening at Redbird arena in game one of the two game series against the Crusaders.

The Redbirds had a slow start to the game trailing 10-2 early in the first half and could not find a way to come back from that, scoring just 23 points in the first half. After a slow offensive start in the first half the Redbirds offense kicked in gear and fought their way back into the game, but the Crusaders proved to be too much for them Friday evening.

“We came in a little sluggish, execution was a big problem for us.” said freshman Howard Fleming Jr.

The Redbirds were led by a big second half from DJ Horne with 19 points for the game, Dusan Marhocic added 15 points with 5 rebounds. Freshman Howard Fleming Jr grabbed a career high 10 rebounds and had 4 assists as well. The Crusaders were led by Donovan Clay who had 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

ISU falls to 5-9 on the year and 2-6 in Missouri Valley play. The Redbirds will look to bounce back tomorrow night as they play Valparaiso again in the season series finale. Tip-off will be at 5 p.m. at Redbird Arena.
