NORMAL, Ill. — Although the Redbird swim and dive team suffered a 240-58 road loss to the Indiana State Sycamores on Oct. 9, the team remains positive as performances improve and individual swimmers earn conference-wide recognition.
Haley Fris made a splash, finishing second in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58.76. With Fris’s assistance, the team secured another second place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay alongside teammates Molly Allison, Bailey Gott, and Alex Davis. Fris also improved in all of her events compared to the Oct. 2nd meet against Quincy.
Allison competed in the 100-yard breaststroke finishing with a time of a 1:04.71. Her performance earned her second place in the event and marked the eighth-fastest 100-yard breaststroke time in Redbird history.
The team’s divers made their season debut at the Vigo County Aquatic Center. Selena Corona put the Redbirds on the board with a third-place 3-meter dive score of 241.20 points, only three points shy of her personal record.
Freya Hingston recorded top-three finishes in two events: the 200-yard butterfly, with a time of 2:10.25, and the 100-yard butterfly, with a time of 59.17. Following her performance in the season opener against Quincy, Hingston was named Missouri Valley Conference Women’s Swimmer of the Week. She is the first Redbird to earn the honor this season and the first freshman on the team to receive an MVC weekly award since 2022.
Although the Redbirds did not come out on top, the team had several performances to celebrate. The Redbirds will travel to Athens, Ohio, to compete Oct. 15-16.
