NORMAL, Ill. – Redbird women’s basketball was named a divisional winner for the money they raised during their annual Play4Kay game in February.
The Kay Yow Cancer Fund announced Friday that Illinois State raised the most money out of all competing non-BCS Division I schools. With a grand total of over $27,000, the Redbirds earned divisional recognition for the fifth year in a row.
“The Play4Kay game always holds a special place in my heart,” said Head Coach Kristen Gillespie. “To see her legacy live on and to have the outpouring of support from our community is tremendous. Coach Yow was one of my biggest role models and I could not be prouder of the Redbird family for all of their efforts in making this event a continued success.”
Gillespie played under Coach Yow at NC State from 1996-1999.
The funds raised came from in-game raffles, a silent auction and donations from those who competed in various courtside events during the game.
The Kay Yow Cancer Fund has raised over $7 million since its establishment in 2007.
