WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Freshman Fernando Cobo Delgado delivered a career-best performance Tuesday to help Illinois State move up one spot and finish sixth at the Purdue Fall Invitational at Kampen-Cosler Golf Course.

The Redbirds entered the final round in seventh place after posting a 36-hole score of 740 in the tournament’s unique “play six, score five” format, which counts the top five scores from six golfers instead of the traditional four scores from a five-player lineup.

Illinois State responded with a strong final-round effort, finishing with a three-round team total of 1,118 and climbing ahead of Purdue Fort Wayne and Butler to claim sixth place.

Host Purdue captured the team title with a score of 1,076, followed by Toledo (1,084), Ball State (1,094), Indiana (1,099) and Northern Illinois (1,101), to round out the top five.

The day belonged to Cobo Delgado, who fired a career-low 4-under 68 in the final round, tying him for the fifth-lowest round ever recorded by an Illinois State freshman and helping him finish the tournament at 212 (4-under), tied for fifth individually.

After opening the tournament with rounds of 70 and 74, Cobo Delgado entered the final 18 holes at even par before surging up the leaderboard with five birdies and 12 pars, recording one of the best freshman tournament performances in program history.

Cobo Delgado was among the tournament’s most consistent players. His par-3 scoring average of 2.83 ranked among the field’s best, while his 4.58 average on par-5 holes also tied near the top of the standings.

He also ranked among the tournament leaders in total pars, accumulating 27 over the first two rounds, the third-most in the field.

Senior Max Faucquez also produced a strong tournament for the Redbirds. After opening with rounds of 72 and 74, Faucquez closed with a 2-under 70 to finish tied for 12th at 216.

He recorded five birdies and 10 pars during the final round and finished among the tournament leaders in par-5 scoring, birdies and par-3 scoring.

Illinois State received additional counting scores from sophomore Gonzalo Cuellar and freshman Rayden Tee.

Cuellar finished tied for 58th after posting a final-round 78, while Tee tied for 65th following an 82 in the final round.

Through the opening two rounds, Tee totaled five birdies and 21 pars, while Cuellar recorded three birdies and 25 pars.

Freshman Beau Eftink and sophomore Aiden Cudney rounded out the Redbird lineup. Eftink tied for 72nd with a tournament score of 233 and was particularly effective on par-3 holes, ranking among the tournament leaders with a 2.88 scoring average through the opening rounds. Cudney finished tied for 80th at 237.

Illinois State’s rise on the final day marked a strong finish in a competitive 13-team field as the Redbirds concluded the Purdue Fall Invitational with momentum heading into the final event of the fall season.

Illinois State will wrap up its 2026 fall schedule beginning Monday, Oct. 19, at the Dayton Flyer Invitational.
