NORMAL, Ill.- On Wednesday night, the Illinois State Redbirds gutted out a 70–65 victory at Murray State, snapping a key test on the road and keeping pace in the MVC race.
From the opening tip at the CFSB Center, this one had the feel of a classic conference clash — physical, tense, and decided down the stretch. Illinois State jumped out with a 35–29 halftime lead, riding the strong play of junior forward Chase Walker, who willed the Redbirds to victory on both ends.
Ty Pence added 12 points and five rebounds, providing steady offense and toughness on the glass, while Mason Klabo chipped in 10 points, including timely perimeter shots that helped the Redbirds maintain control.
Despite a strong effort from the Racers, including consistent interior play and late pressure, Illinois State stayed composed in the closing minutes. The Redbirds made enough plays defensively and on the glass to protect their lead and seal the win. The victory marks a significant road result for Illinois State and reinforces the Redbirds’ growing confidence as they continue to position themselves in the thick of the MVC race.
With the victory, Illinois State improved to 15-7 overall (7-4 MVC) and now tied for 3rd place in the MVC standings. ISU will be back in action on Tuesday, February 3rd, as they will travel back home to take on in-state opponent, the Southern Illinois Salukis.
