Zara Larsson- Midnight Sun

Sarah Mehret September 22, 2025

Midnight Sun is Zara Larsson’s newest album, released on September 26th, 2025. This album is fun, high-energy, and full of euro-pop and EDM influences. Larsson showcases a more mature version of her earlier music, while still drawing inspiration from the 2016 pop sound that initially made her famous. With upbeat tracks and polished production, Midnight Sun highlights her growth as an artist and her ability to pull listeners in.

The album’s opener and title track, “Midnight Sun”, is a standout. Released as a single on June 13th, 2025, it sets the tone for the album with an upbeat and energetic start. In the song, Larsson sings about a night spent with someone she loves that seems like it will never end. She also references the midnight sun, a phenomenon in the Arctic Circle where the sun does not set for over 24 hours, emphasizing the idea of a never-ending night. With its electro-pop sound and lively energy, “Midnight Sun” perfectly opens up the album and gives listeners a glimpse of what is to follow.

“Eurosummer”, the sixth track on the album, emphasizes the European influences present throughout Midnight Sun. The song features a distinctly Euro-pop sound, incorporating elements of both Scandi-pop and dance-pop. Larsson sings about a European summer fling, full of late nights and carefree vacation memories, creating a track that is lively and highly danceable. While Euro-pop is not typically a genre I would gravitate toward, I found this song enjoyable.

The eighth track, “The Ambition”, reveals a more mature side to Larsson. This is her most vulnerable track, and she sings about comparison and wanting to be the best, chasing the modern American Dream of fame and success. Larsson notes that everything is a competition, and this track serves as a self-reflection on her pursuit of validation through her music. I love that Larsson uses this song to shift away from the carefree Euro-pop and EDM sound, instead showcasing a more open and introspective side.

Upbeat, energetic, and expressive, this album feels like it really showcases the growth in Zara Larsson’s sound. This album maintains the 2016 summer nostalgia from her older music, while offering listeners a fresh new experience. While several tracks shine, others fall flat and feel repetitive, which prevents the album from being a fully standout release. Overall, Midnight Sun is a promising step forward for Larsson, highlighting her growth as an artist while hinting at greater hits to come.
