Written by John Rozny on March 20, 2024
NORMAL, Ill.- The Town of Normal held their second council meeting of the month on March 18.
Traffic lights have been approved following Mondays council meeting to be installed at numerous intersections of Fort Jesse Road, including the intersections at Landmark Drive and Greenbriar Drive. The council approved a contract for the project given to Rowe Construction, estimated around $2.1 million.
Director of Public Works and Engineering Ryan Otto spoke at the meeting about the project, saying how the project is planned to be an improvement to traffic safety at their respective intersections.
While Otto said the installation of the traffic signals is quite simple, complications can arise from synchronizing the lights to the timing of traffic signals on Veterans Parkway, which will take up the bulk of the projects time.
The council approved additional improvements around Normal, including approving the preliminary design project for the skate park located at Fairview Park. The council cited aging equipment and surfaces at the park, with the ramps being over 20 years old and the surface of the park being 50 years old.
American Ramp Company will handle the design and construction of the park update, with a contract awarded not to exceed $440,000.
In other business, the council:
-Approved of the zoning for the Healing Stone Court apartment complex in north Normal.
-Approved of the publication for an updated zoning map for the town.
-Issued numerous liquor licenses for businesses and venues around town in a session held before the general council meeting.
The town’s next council meeting will be held at 7 p.m on April 1.
