Normal Town Council Going Green with Davey Resource Group

Written by on March 3, 2020

NORMAL, Ill.- Normal’s Urban forest will be receiving the attention it needs with the approval of a resource group who will be taking inventory of all of trees in the area.

The Normal Town council approved a contract with Davey’s Resource Group for over $40,000 to enable the group to conduct a street tree inventory.

Director of Parks and Recreation Doug Damery said this will help them prioritize maintenance of all trees.

“They’re going to count each tree. They’re going to assess that tree, evaluate it, and record all of the things that go along with that,” said Damery.

After assessing the tree, they will determine the age, condition of the tree and the diameter at breast height.

“We can identify trees that are maybe not as healthy, and get out and prune them. Maybe help get them healthy, or maybe remove them if they’re dangerous,” said Damery.

“This inventory of trees will allow the Parks and Recreation to create a base line they can build on for years, and input data about how their tree inventory is growing,” said Damery.

The approval from the Normal council gave Davey Resource Group permission to come into Normal to do the inventory for them.

According to Damery, this is part of a grant program they applied for through the  Illinois Department of Natural Resources through the U.S. Forest Service.
