Normal Town Council approves property tax reduction

Written by on November 2, 2026

NORMAL, Ill. – The Normal Town council unanimously approved the 2026 property tax levy, with a price reduction.

“This is arguably one of the more important things we vote on all year,” council member Kathleen Lorenz said.

According to council member Scott Preston, this is not only a reduction in the rate that property owners will be paying for their town portion of their property taxes, but it is also a dollar reduction for the average homeowner.

“If your home is worth 280, 290,000, town’s portion per this you should see a reduction [of] about $54 in your tax bill next year, which is always a positive in this economy,” Preston said.

Council member Karyn Smith cautioned to look at the itemization of property taxes on your bill in May.

“While your overall tax rate based on what normal is assessing is going down, we are part of a conglomerate of taxing bodies, and some of them may not go in that same direction. So do look closely at that May bill that lists every taxing authority,” Smith said.

Normal Town Council approves the new property tax annually.

“It’s been well thought out,” Lorenz said. “I think we have adopted some of the things this year that we amended to last year, so I appreciate the follow-through on those amendments to bring it to the original proposal for this year.”

Extending the Children’s Discovery Museum

During the Normal Town Council Meeting, the council also approved a resolution to extend the Children’s Discovery Museum.

Construction with P.J. Hoerr is not to exceed $863,729.
The Normal Town Council meets on the first and third Mondays of each month.
