NORMAL, Ill. – Snow removal crews in the town of Normal have been clearing roads and sidewalks following this week’s winter storm.

“As the storm gets closer and the predictions and models become more accurate, and those predictions fall within a certain range of inches, we prepare for the storm based on those forecasts,” said Ryan Otto, director of public works and engineering.

The Public Works Department monitors the National Weather Service to track snowfall conditions, including accumulation, texture and timing, to best prepare for storms. Preparations include issuing parking bans and warnings, preparing salt supplies and staging equipment.

Crews sometimes plow in tandem on major streets to move snow more efficiently, Otto said, and continue plowing until roadways are cleared.

During extreme winter weather, the town may also use beet juice, known as “beet heat,” on roadways. The solution reacts more quickly than traditional salt and is considered a more sustainable option.

While efficient snow removal is important, Otto said the department’s primary concern is public safety for drivers and pedestrians.

“Stay home if there’s a winter weather advisory if you can,” Otto said. “If you can’t, slow down, be careful and watch for plows. They may not see you.”
