NORMAL, Ill. – White Horse Academy recently held an open house to introduce their community to their institution. Amid their very first school year; the private elementary school added a different style of curriculum to the sea of educational institutions in McLean County.

Classical Christian education blends liberal arts and Christianity, with the goal of giving kids a biblical perspective while learning grammar, values and other typical educational skills.

“So, we have a lot of the core subjects,” Board President Drew Martin said. “We maybe think about them a little differently in the sense that we kind of view them all as integrated, so we’re always trying to connect them and see how they all interrelate to one another and ultimately in how God created the world and all things are connected.”

There are seven main liberal arts points through the “trivium,” which includes grammar, logic, and rhetoric and “quadrivium,” which includes arithmetic, astronomy, geometry, and music.

“A true classical christian education by grade 12 will have you being able to read some of the greatest minds and learn from the greatest minds who have ever lived,” Martin said.

The works that are highlighted usually consist of those of scholars and Christian works, as well as Roman, Greek and Western thinkers. The different scholarly standpoints contribute to the different liberal arts highlighted in the curriculum.

“There is one overarching purpose, which is to glorify God, and then secondly is just a love for learning, a love for reading, a love for appreciating those who have gone before us as another factor of classical education,” Martin said.
