Nancy Pelosi Condemns Trump’s Plan to Declare a National Emergency

Written by on February 15, 2019

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Senate signed a bill last night which prevents another government shutdown, as congress and the president feud over expenditure on the border wall.

President Trump also signed the bill, but announced that he will declare a national emergency to get funding to build a wall on the U.S-Mexican border. Senate Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi spoke out against the announcement, condemning Trump’s proposal.

“It’s important to note that when the president declares this emergency, first of all, it’s not an emergency” said Pelosi. “What’s happening at the border, it’s a humanitarian challenge to us.”

In the news conference, she said the border wall is not the emergency the country needs to be focusing on at this time. “You want to talk about a national emergency, let’s talk about today” Pelosi said, referring to the one year anniversary of the Parkland shooting massacre. Seventeen students and teachers were killed.

Pelosi is also concerned that Trump will set an example for future presidents to declare national emergencies to get what they want while bypassing congress.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has said he will support Trump’s emergency, which could be announced at any time today.

By declaring an emergency, President Trump could potentially pool more than eight billion dollars together for the construction of the border wall.’
