Milner Library features Redbird Reign exhibit for Illinois State homecoming

Written by on October 16, 2023

NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State’s Homecoming Week included many different events, athletics, and even a display case, located in Milner Library, of artifacts from the past.

Illinois State’s University Archivist April Anderson-Zorn spoke about the importance of this display case and in depth about a few artifacts.

A few of the artifacts shown in the case are a baseball bat and a blanket with “I-State” on it.

Anderson-Zorn says, “The I-State blanket was the perfect item for any spectator to use at an outdoor game or laying in the grass.”

The baseball bat was used at the NCAA Championship game in 1969.  This honorable bat was used during their 12-0 win over Southwest Missouri, featuring the win and the team’s season accomplishments.  The significance of this display is to educate current students and connect them with their school history.

Anderson-Zorn says, “One significance is supporting the school pride and its long history with athletics.”

She takes various steps to set up this display, such as coming with planning and the idea of telling a story.

Anderson-Zorn says, “This year’s exhibit was simple, just telling the audience about the specific item.”
