NORMAL, Ill. — Democratic Chairwoman Nikita Richards says candidates are working to get the votes until the very last minute. Tonight the volunteers and candidates will be connecting via ZOOM, phone and Chemberly Cummings, who is running for the 105th District, is hosting a Facebook Live Watch Party.
“We chose to do this instead of a huge celebration or watch party simply because of the risk,” Chairwoman Richards stated. “Our numbers in McLean county, as far as our COVID-19 positivity rate, are increasing.”
Instead the McLean County democrats provided support to local causes. Using watch party funds they supported the family community resource center located in west Bloomington and the Children’s home and aid in McLean County.
While the democrats practice philanthropy outside the election, they are currently focused on defeating the six Republican incumbents on the county board. Richards said this is the Democrats shot to win back those seats.
“We have the opportunity to have control of the county board.” Richards said. “I know many thought this was a far-cry but, I’ll tell ya’, our candidates are proving them wrong.”
Richards and volunteers are working to get every last vote. She says early voter turnout is roughly 40% in Mclean County. These objectively great turnout numbers are good news for the county as a whole, but especially the Democrats who are in tight elections versus Republican incumbents. Regardless, the Democratic party here in McLean County is focusing on every one of their races.
“All of the democratic races are important to me here in McLean County as well as the Illinois 13th and 18th.” Richards added. “From the top of the ballot all the way down there is no one race more important than the other.”
The McLean County Republicans and Chair Connie Beard will be at the VFW in Bloomington having their watch party. The Libertarians and Chair Kevin Woodard will be gathering at Crawford’s Corner Pub.
