NORMAL, Ill. – Heartland Community College is showcasing an interactive sculpture exhibit, “PERENNIAL OPTIMISM 2.0,” by artist David Dow. The collection, inspired by both resilient perennial plants and extraordinary women in the community, is on display at the Joe McCauley Gallery until March 29, 2024.

Dow’s collection tells a powerful parable about perennials, emphasizing the potential for renewal even in the face of life’s winter.

Dow says, “Even in the winter of their lives, with care and attention, people come back.”

The artist encourages viewers not to judge based on appearances and to appreciate the hidden resilience within.

Accompanied by QR codes, each of the six sculptures, combining elements of plants and women, leads visitors to 2–3 minute monologues and video interviews featuring Dow and the inspiring women who influenced his work. These narratives showcase the incredible courage and resilience of those who have overcome adversity.

Dow’s involvement with community organizations such as YWCA McClean County, YWCA Labyrinth and Labyrinth Made Goods has deeply influenced his art. The exhibit, open on weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., offers free admission and welcomes group appointments upon request.

To complement the exhibit, Heartland Community College will host two panel discussions on March 28, 2024, at 9:30 a.m. in the Astroth Community Education Center. Titled “Stories of Resilience” and “Resilient Community.” These discussions, led by Heartland faculty, will feature the women who inspired Dow’s work and representatives from various community organizations.

Attendees can enjoy not only the exhibits but also participate in these insightful discussions that delve into the profound stories of resilience within the community. Admission to exhibits, events and parking is free as Heartland encourages all to engage in a celebration of art and community spirit.
