NORMAL, Ill. – AFSCME Local 1110 has been on strike for nearly a week, with no clear end in sight.
Union members and students have raised concerns about the salary increases for Aondover Tarhule. According to WEEK25 News, Tarhule’s raise is part of a four-year contract signed in March 2024, bringing his base salary to $450,000 annually.
The increase has sparked debate over whether the university president is overpaid.
According to Illinois State University News, the university enrolled 21,944 students in fall 2025, a 2.1% increase from the previous year. The size of the student body reflects the scope of responsibilities associated with leading the institution.
For comparison, Northern Illinois University reported an enrollment of 16,708 students in fall 2025. Its president, Lisa Freeman, is set to retire in 2028 after nearly a decade in the role, according to the Northern Star. Her contract keeps her base salary at $515,000 for her final two years.
Eastern Illinois University enrolled 8,857 students, according to EIU at a Glance. The Daily Eastern News reported that President Jay Gatrell received approval in 2023 for a $320,000 salary and a $32,289 annual housing allowance.
While debate over Tarhule’s salary continues, it remains separate from ongoing contract negotiations. The strike persists, and wage discussions between AFSCME Local 1110 and the university have yet to reach a resolution.
