NORMAL, Ill. – October isn’t just for Halloween; it’s also Breast Cancer Education and Awareness month.
Vice President of Philanthropy for Zeta Tau Alpha, Julia Cox gave some information about the month and some events the sorority holds to raise money for Breast Cancer research.
Cox said that she makes sure that the members in Zeta Tau Alpha are aware of what it really means to be raising money for Breast Cancer because it can affect anyone, and individuals might know someone with the disease.
“It’s really important to keep talking about breast cancer even past October, because it can effect a lot of people,” Cox said.
Last spring they attended the Play4Kay Women’s Basketball game at Illinois State. The game was dedicated to women who have fought Breast Cancer. The sorority also held a Zeta 5k in the spring and raised around $14,000.
This term, Zeta Tau Alpha is hosting a fraternity talent show called Big Man on Campus. There are twelve fraternities participating and each will have a group performance. Then, one individual from their fraternity will perform a talent. Other members in the sorority coach the fraternities for their big performance.
Zeta Tau Alpha also has a committee of girls who plan out the event with selling raffles, getting sponsorships, and budgeting.
For some of the members of Zeta, Breast Cancer Education and Awareness is more than just the group’s base philanthropy.
“We have a handful of girls whose mom’s or grandma’s have had breast cancer,” Cox said.
Zeta Tau Alpha’s Big Man on Campus talent show fundraiser will be hosted this Friday, October 24th in Braden Auditorium.
