Interim Chief of Equity and Inclusion at Illinois State University launches weekly conversational event

NORMAL, Ill. — Interim Chief of Equity and Inclusion Officer Byron Craig is hosting a new weekly event called ISU in Conversation, aimed at fostering discussions among students about identity, sexuality and political ideologies.

The events take place at the Bone Student Center from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., with the next sessions scheduled for Oct. 7 and Oct. 14. These sessions focus on pre-election discussions, belonging, and success. Craig, who is also the president and cofounder of the Queer Coalition, hopes to address issues affecting all communities through this initiative.

“We need to create a space for students to discuss their concerns—especially regarding identity and sexuality,” Craig says. “I can take these concerns and think about what programming we can implement to educate people and provide resources.”

Diversity is one of ISU’s core values, meaning the Office of Equity and Inclusion plays a crucial role at the University. ISU in Conversation includes separate sessions for staff and faculty as well as students. Topics such as the upcoming election, LGBTQ+ issues, and general campus challenges are discussed in an open-minded and constructive atmosphere.

“I want students to pose questions and engage in conversation,” Craig says. “It’s free flowing.”

Craig emphasizes that the event is student-centered, in order to promote forward-thinking discussions about the future of the campus. Student Health Services also participates in these sessions to help students process their conversations.

Craig aims to enhance the office’s visibility through new initiatives that reflect the perspectives of the student body.

“Right now, we’re an office of one person. I’d like to see us grow,” Craig said. “I’ve always believed that each generation brings change. To be an effective professor, we must be aware of our students’ backgrounds and experiences.”

He also introduces a forthcoming initiative, “Equity and Belonging 2030,” which seeks to create action plans for improving campus diversity. This initiative includes surveys for students and staff to assess feelings of belonging, success, and inclusion.

Craig aims for ISU in Conversation to continue through the spring and summer.
