Written by on March 3, 2026

NORMAL, Ill.- The Redbirds opened the spring with a top five finish, saw TJ Barger continue rewriting parts of the record book, and now head to Louisiana with momentum.

Border Olympics: Fast Start in Texas

Illinois State opened the spring season at the Border Olympics in Laredo and climbed two spots on the final day to finish tied for fifth in a 13-team field.

Senior TJ Barger led the charge, finishing fourth individually at three under par (70-69-71). The performance marked his fifth top 10 finish in six tournaments this season and earned him his third MVC Golfer of the Week honor this year.

Max Faucquez and Samuel Ottwell each tied for 27th, as ISU posted an 861 team score.

Puerto Rico: Climbing the Leaderboard

The Redbirds then traveled to the Dorado Beach Intercollegiate, where they improved three spots during the second round, before finishing ninth overall in the 15-team field.

Barger closed the tournament with a two-under 70, giving him 16 rounds at or under par this season which is tied for the ninth most in a single season in program history. He now has 43 career rounds at or under par, the fifth most in Illinois State history.

Faucquez (221) and Ottwell (222) followed closely behind, continuing a steady start to the spring campaign.

The Big Picture

Two tournaments into the spring season, Illinois State has positioned itself well with a top five team finish, a top four individual performance, and multiple under par rounds across the lineup. Senior TJ Barger has led the charge, continuing his steady play with a 70.1 scoring average, a mark that would stand as the lowest single season average in program history.
