Driver Narrowly Avoids Rec Center in Main Street Accident

NORMAL, Ill. — A driver drove onto the sidewalk and into several poles outside the Student Fitness Center on the Illinois State University campus just before noon Wednesday.

Normal police arrested the driver at the scene for driving with a suspended license.

The Jeep was the only vehicle involved.

Several businesses on the west side of Main Street lost power for several minutes after the vehicle struck a utility pole and a streetlight.

Multiple emergency vehicles responded to the scene, but no ambulance was present.

South Main Street is closed between Dale Street and Dry Grove Street.
