BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – One of the reasons the Bloomington Bison got brought to town was to boost inner city spending. Now, with their inaugural season in the books, Bloomington’s Director of Arts And Entertainment, Anthony Nelson, is already seeing the impact.
“Downtown businesses and the arena’s anchor tent have done wonders for foot traffic before and after games,” Nelson said. “Restaurants and hotel revenue are up. We’re projecting the team’s overall economic impact at well over $5 and $6 million dollars.”
Nelson also spoke on the Bison’s role beyond just money, highlighting how the team has helped bring the community together.
“The Bison also had players and staff members visit nearly every elementary school in town, reading with students and organizing activities like floor hockey,” Nelson said. “I think that goes a long way, not just in the short term, but in the long term as well.”
With the Bison being a hit in town, Nelson shared that there may be another exciting addition on the horizon.
“Indoor soccer has started to grow in popularity,” Nelson says. “We feel there are some opportunities there, and I wouldn’t be shocked if, in two or three years, we see another pro team come to town.”
Although the Bison did not make the playoffs this season, their impact on the community was palatable. They wrapped up their inaugural season with a 31-35 record.
