NORMAL, Ill. – City Council Member Cody Hendricks is running for Mayor of Bloomington in the upcoming municipal election. He explained his biggest goal if elected and how he plans to translate his council experience to the mayor position.
“I’ve been on the council for two and a half years now,” Hendricks said. “You know some of the big accomplishments would be around the downtown streetscape plan. That was a pivotal part of my campaign for city council, and I was really happy that after I got elected [it] came before us and we were able to gather the votes to be able to see that through the downtown.”
His main focus if elected is ensuring affordable housing for Bloomington residents.
“Yeah, so my focus really first when we think about housing affordability, that really touches every member of our community,” Hendricks said. “From the unhoused who can’t find shelter currently, from young people who are looking either post high school or post college, for affordable rents, for probable apartment living, and that’s right now really not attainable.”
Hendricks also explains how he wants to work with the Economic Development Council to see what other housing developments for the area can be made, along with taking a look at zoning codes, as it has a direct correlation with parking, duplexes and other types of housing.
“I want to see the downtown streetscape plan actually move forward,” Hendricks said. “We approved it, and we approved the work to design the first phase, but that is going to come before us for a final vote to expend the funds and to actually, you know, break ground and start to do it.”
With previous years on the city council, he gives more insight as to how he plans to use collaboration to translate his council experience to the mayor position.
“…Having the two years that I’ve had on the Bloomington Council, you know, really, everything that I focused on in those roles is all about collaboration and how we work with other people to really get things done,” Hendricks said.
The municipal election will take place April 1.
