BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Chestnut Family Health Center hosted their Tiny Changes Mighty Hearts seminar on Wednesday.
The seminar aimed to teach attendees how daily choices can affect heart health and highlight the benefits of visiting a cardiologist. February is American Heart Month, aligning with the event. Valentine’s Day is a plus.
“We’re hoping to get to people before they’re having heart issues to give them some tools right now like eating vegetables, eating whole grains, exercising regularly, everything that is good for your heart health,” said Randi Derrig, community relations coordinator for Chestnut Health Systems.
Guest speakers joined Chestnut Family Health Center to ease concerns about visiting a cardiologist. The event also featured lunch and free blood pressure checks.
“You don’t realize you might have high blood pressure, and it has a lot of implications,” Derrig said. “It’s a great way for people to feel more comfortable with a provider.”
According to the American Heart Association, heart disease remains the No. 1 cause of death in the United States. Seeing a cardiologist before problems arise can help detect early signs of heart disease.
“We’re hoping to break down some of those barriers that might be very intimidating for people to go see a cardiologist,” Derrig said.
Chestnut Family Health Center plans to continue the effort by hosting more educational seminars. For more information about future events or to schedule an appointment, visit the Chestnut Family Health Center website.
