Bloomington Gears Up to Face Explosive U-High Offense in Week 2

NORMAL, Ill. – Coming off a dominant 40-7 win in Week 1, the Bloomington High School football team is riding high into its next challenge. Head coach Niall Mulcahy praised his squad’s performance in the opener but knows Week 2 will bring a new test.
The Purple Raiders travel to face University High, a team that lit up the scoreboard with 71 points in its own season debut. Mulcahy said his players need to stay disciplined, focused and communicate to keep pace with the Pioneers’ explosive offense.
“U-High has a really good offense. They play at a high tempo, get on the ball quickly, and snap it fast. They use a lot of different looks and formations to try to get you on your heels,” Mulcahy said. “So I’m telling my guys to communicate on defense, make sure we’re calling out what we see, and stay disciplined.”
The Purple Raiders’ offense looked sharp in Week 1, putting up 40 points, but Mulcahy believes there’s still plenty of room to grow.
“We need to continue to find areas of improvement. I thought the offensive line played really well in Week 1, and continuing to have those big boys up front running their feet and moving people is going to be key,” he said. “With Kade throwing the ball and continuing to make good decisions, getting it to our athletes on the perimeter, and us running hard, I’m happy with what we saw Friday — but we still have room to grow.”
Bloomington’s defense was stout in its opener, holding its opponent to just one touchdown, while the offense showed balance on the ground and through the air. Mulcahy believes that the same formula will be key to keeping momentum alive.
The Purple Raiders and Pioneers will square off on Friday night in what’s expected to be a thrilling matchup. With both teams boasting high-powered offenses, the game could come down to which defense can step up and make the key stops.
