BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Bloomington Fire Department has completed its recruitment process for new members while implementing changes to its shift schedule aimed at improving firefighter wellness.

The department previously operated on a three-platoon system in which firefighters worked 24 hours on duty followed by 48 hours off. Under the new schedule, firefighters will work a 24-hour shift followed by 72 hours off.

Capt. Frank Friend said the updated schedule is designed to help firefighters maintain a better work-life balance.

“There’s a growing trend in the fire service across the country that is focusing on the physical well-being and mental well-being of firefighters,” Friend said.

One of the department’s goals is to ensure firefighters are supported both mentally and physically.

“By extending the number of days off between shifts, it provides for a healthier work environment, provides for fewer work injuries, and promotes a better work-life balance,” Friend said. “And gets firefighters closer to a 40-hour workweek.”

The change follows a six-month contract negotiation. Department leaders said the shift adjustment aligns with their goal of helping firefighters balance their professional responsibilities with family life.

“When we look at a career that spans 30 years, providing that extra day off allows firefighters to decompress, have more family time, and then when they are on shift they’re more healthy from a physical standpoint,” Friend said.

Friend said the department plans to continue evaluating ways to prioritize its members’ well-being while maintaining a high level of service to the community.
